The History of Portals Nous, Majorca

Villa Marpessa, our villa, is located in Portals Nous which is in the municipality of Calvia in the southwest of the island of Mallorca and is a coastal town that also hosts one of the most prestigious marinas in the Mediterranean nearby, Puerto Portals. Its popularity is due to its beautiful beaches, local facilities and proximity to Palma de Mallorca.


Portals Nous, called "The Village" by the locals, is a small, beautiful and relaxing town in the Majorcan municipality of Calvia. Nestled between the Sierra na Burguesa and the southwest coast, the village and its surroundings have become one of the most desirable residential areas on the island. Many affluent British, German and Swedish internationals have chosen to buy second homes in the surrounding areas.


The village itself is centred around Carretera Andratx, because of the selection of local and international restaurants, bars, beauty salons and convenience shops along this strip of coastal road. There are a number of apartment blocks, villas and hotels in the town and the neighbouring area.


Portals Nous offers an idyllic location for the perfect holiday. Either with a partner, family, or a group of friends, it provides not only convenience but a lovely location with a large number of quality restaurants and bars.


Bendinat Castle, a XIX century building in a Central European style, towers over the area. In the nearby golf course at Bendinat -overlooking a beautiful there are still remains of the old Islamic water conduits. In Calle Oratori, on a small hill that overlooks the coast, there is Portals Oratory, built in 1865.




The origins of Portals Nous are in the nineteen thirties, when middle-class families from Palma de Mallorca started to build second summer houses in the lands of the old farm of s´Hostalet.



The Balearic Islands are famous for their first-class beaches, and one of the best is the beach of Portals Nous, Playa Oratori. It is nestled between the harbour wall of Puerto Portal and the island of Sales and the turquoise waters are crystal clear, providing excellent visibility for snorkelling. The two beaches, Oratorio Portals and playa de Costa d’en Blanes, are between 220 and 50 metres long and are next to the bay of La Calita a sandy area surrounded by pine trees that allows visitors to experience the village in a private and intimate way. The Playa Punta Portal, which extends to the marina, is also small and pleasant.



The stunning and exclusive marina of Puerto Portals is located next to Portals Nous. and belongs to the discerning and wealthy. There is an amazing culinary offering in the marina, with traditional Spanish cuisine complemented by a number of Asian restaurants serving Chinese, Indian and sushi dishes. A popular bar and restaurant called Wellies has three outdoor terraces from which guests can enjoy magnificent views of the marina. The marina itself is named after the point of Punto Portals and was built in the early 1980s, a time when Mallorca began to experience strong growth linked to its unstoppable international tourism.



Nearby are attractions such as Marineland, Pirates, Karting Magaluf, Katmandu Park, Aqualand, Western Water Park.



If you wish to spread your wings and explore more of the southwest and west of Mallorca, you will find that from Portals Nous the MA-1 motorway, conveniently located from our villa, will transport you from Portals Nous to Palma de Nova, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa, Paguera or Andratx 20 minutes to the west or into Palma de Mallorca to the east. In fact, going further afield, all destinations in Mallorca are within a one hour drive of the Villa Marpessa, including Pollença, Alcudia, Soller, Lluc and Manacor.
